The narrow ruffler foot #16 is suitable for ruffling light to medium-weight fabrics. The fabric is fed unevenly during sewing, giving it its characteristic ruffled appearance.

The special notch on the Gathering Foot #16 also allows you to sew the gathered fabric directly onto a smooth piece of fabric in a single step.

To do this, the smooth fabric is pushed into the notch and not gathered. 

This foot is not compatible with BERNINA machines older than 1996.
