The Gathering Foot #17 is suitable for gathering light to medium-weight fabrics. The fabric is fed unevenly during sewing, giving it its characteristic gather.

The special cutout on the Gathering Foot #17 also allows you to sew the gathered material directly onto a smooth piece of fabric in a single step.

To do this, the smooth fabric is pushed into the notch and not gathered. 

This foot is suitable for BERNINA machines manufactured before 1996.
